ARE FLEXIBILITY AND MOBILITY

THE SAME ?

Flexibility and mobility are often used interchangeably, but they actually refer to different aspects of movement. Flexibility is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to lengthen passively through a range of motion. It primarily focuses on the muscles' elasticity and how far they can stretch. On the other hand, mobility is the ability to move a joint actively through its full range of motion with control. It involves not just muscles, but also joints, ligaments, tendons, and the nervous system working together to produce smooth and coordinated movement. While flexibility is important, mobility plays a crucial role in functional movements and daily activities. Improving both flexibility and mobility is essential for maintaining a well-rounded movement practice and preventing injuries.

ARE YOGA & MOBILITY (KINSTRETCH) THE SAME?

While yoga and mobility have some similarities, they are not the same. Yoga encompasses the coming into and holding physical poses and shapes (asana), breathwork (prana), meditation, and philosophy to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Mobility, on the other hand, focuses specifically on improving joint health, joint range of motion, flexibility, and overall movement patterns through a system of mobility techniques and strategies which are not typically used in yoga.

While there can be overlap between the two, they serve different purposes and cater to different aspects of physical well-being.

How can Yoga help?

Yoga is a practice that can significantly improve flexibility.

The various yoga poses promote muscle lengthening and relaxation, which can alleviate stiffness and tension that limit mobility.

Additionally, the magic of yoga happens in the breath and in fostering the awareness that the tools of yoga can apply beyond the mat and into your daily life. Linking your breath and the shapes we make with our bodies while holding the various yoga postures anchors you to the present moment, mutes mind chatter and connects you to your body. With regular practice, you’ll unearth the ability to tap into the power of your own breath on and off the mat for both your mental & physical well-being.
